Wolfratshausen

- "Permit me, I'm an asshole": With the title of his book, Dr.

Pablo Hagemeyer, born in 1970, quite deliberately.

His work on narcissism stormed the bestseller lists and for several months was among the ten best-selling non-fiction books in the ranking of the news magazine "Der Spiegel".

Hagemeyer knows what he writes about in his book: On the one hand, because he regularly has to do with people like that professionally.

On the other hand, because the 50-year-old sees himself as a narcissist, albeit a “nice narcissist”.

How does he come to the self-diagnosis?

"I want to be successful, maybe I am a bit colorful sometimes, and it's important to me to deal with cool people." All traits that you can recognize in narcissists.

The latter aspect of his self-diagnosis in particular ensured that Hagemeyer, in addition to his work as a psychotherapist with his own practice, author and podcaster, also has another high-profile profession.

The Wolfratshauser acts as a medical advisor for various medical television formats.

“That was an idea that I spun around as a student,” he says.

The idea came to him from the "Black Forest Clinic"

During his medical studies in Munich, the avowed fan of the "Black Forest Clinic" was impressed by the sophisticated disease progression and animations in American doctor and clinic series.

“I had the impression that German productions still had room for improvement.” And - a bit narcissistic: “I thought I could help.” He founded a small company with fellow students and quickly received his first orders from TV production companies to work on the scripts.

At some point, Hagemeyer received a request from ZDF.

For a new series, the doctor and psychiatrist was supposed to coach an actor.

“And then Hans Sigl stood in front of me”, the main actor of the popular television series “Der Bergdoktor”.

Hagemeyer took time for the well-known actor.

In Hagemeyer's wife's law firm, “we practiced operations on half a pig”.

A special coaching in which Sigl learned how to appear as a doctor, how to tie a mask and talk to patients.

"My wife came into the room when he was just palpating my lymph nodes," the 50-year-old recalls and laughs.

The Wolfratshauser is still working on the hit series that has been broadcast since 2008.

Dr.

Pablo Hagemeyer

"Der Bergdoktor" is just one of many projects that the family man has pursued in his career to date.

“I feel like I am doing 50 things at the same time,” he reports in an interview with our newspaper, “ten of them work well.” For him, the failure of many ideas is not a big problem: “I have come to terms with the fact that when an idea comes up does not work, something becomes out of the others. ”There is little narcissistic about this attitude:“ Narcissists can only deal with failures and criticism very, very poorly. ”That partly leads to the fact that in his practice in Weilheim people sit in front of him,“ who are feel like a failure, because they do not have the huge success that they claim ”.

Mediocrity is their great fear.

Narcissistic leaders “poison” those around them

In the worst case, negative experiences lead to depression - and the psychiatrist Hagemeyer is in demand.

Working with offended narcissists can be a minefield.

"It's a self-assessment disorder," he says.

Just taking the step of admitting this is a difficult process for most people.

After the publication of his book, the Wolfratshauser noticed that the attitude of some people had changed: "A few patients came to my practice with the book and said: 'I think I have it.'"

The author will remain true to his favorite psychological topic.

For several weeks, Hagemeyer has been working with a Swiss research group that deals with so-called Toxic Leaders, that is, narcissistic leaders who “poison” their environment with their weakness of character.

For the company and its employees, these are "harmful personalities" who are only concerned with their own benefit and standing and who do not shrink from creating dissent, lying or deciding against the common good.

"An incredibly exciting topic, which is not yet known in the mainstream," says the Wolfratshauser.

In the course of his work, he discovered how common narcissism is in society and that most people have something of it.

But that does not mean that Hagemeyer automatically begins to analyze his counterpart with every encounter.

"It's like a filter that I can put on and take off again."
