Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania: Interior Minister Caffier resigns after the arms purchase affair
Because of the affair, the minister from the government of
SPD Prime Minister Manuela Schwesig
said
in the state capital
Schwerin
on Tuesday
that he no longer had the necessary authority for his office
.
With his resignation, he also wants to protect his family and those around him.
It was not the acquisition of the weapon that was a mistake, but how it was handled, said Caffier as a reason.
Schwesig had already stopped expressing her support at the weekend.
“The advocacy of democracy and freedom and the fight against right-wing extremism are central concerns of the state government in Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania.
There must be no doubt about that, ”she told the daily newspaper
taz
when
asked.
Schwesig asked Caffier to clarify the circumstances of the purchase.
Caffier resigns - Schwesig's Vice Prime Minister had admitted mistakes
Caffier had then
admitted mistakes
.
Caffier said on Monday that he should have made a statement about his weapons purchase when he received the results of the investigation by the State Criminal Police Office on the arms dealer.
“Not having done this was a mistake that I regret.” At the same time, Caffier had protected himself against personal attacks.
It was "sheer nonsense and downright defamatory" that he
should be ascribed
a proximity to the
right-wing extremist network Nordkreuz
or other right-wing networks.
