Iota struck an already devastated Nicaragua as a Category 4 hurricane on Tuesday. It is now a tropical storm, but the danger of life-threatening floods, catastrophic winds and landslides remains.

It made landfall just 25 kilometers south of where Hurricane Eta struck two weeks ago.

Eta left thousands of displaced people and dozens of dead in Central America.

Iota is the thirteenth hurricane in the historic 2020 Atlantic hurricane season. So far, there have been 30 named storms, the most ever recorded.

The combined devastation of Iota, Eta and the coronavirus pandemic is likely to plague the area, which already suffers from a poor public health system, for years to come.
