Paris, the most beautiful city in the world?

In any case, the most watched is undoubtedly so much the slightest change in the urban landscape of the capital makes people talk.

Remember the new newspaper kiosks designed by Matali Crasset in 2016 ... The first sketches had raised a stormy wind and the petition launched on Facebook against this "garbage container" had collected more than 50,000 signatures, sometimes from the other side of the world.

Last spring, the coronapistes arranged in an emergency before the deconfinement had also been criticized at length for their plots and yellow lines;

yet used everywhere in other cities, without anyone being moved by it.

Avoid the tears between the "old" and the "modern"

During Anne Hidalgo's first term of office, a number of choices made in terms of town planning or street furniture raised controversy: the pedestrianization of the Place du Panthéon (Ve), the newsstands, the new fountains of the Champs- Elysées (8th century), the huge waste sorting bins, veloboxes and even urinals installed on the quays.

Often the debate between partisans and opponents turned into a caricature and into a standoff between "old" and "modern".

"Paris is a city of reference in terms of heritage, architecture and culture" prided Emmanuel Grégoire (PS), the first deputy of Anne Hidalgo (PS) in charge of town planning this Friday, announcing a major procedure for consultation to reflect on the aesthetics of Paris.

Objective: to honor the heritage, to preserve it while also reflecting… on its evolution.

Because between new uses, the transformation of the capital into a “connected” city, the mayor's desire to make it a more vegetated city, more ecological with new buildings built with more environmentally friendly materials, the urban landscape is inevitably brought to life. to move and adapt.

The City of Paris wishes to implement a new doctrine and new axes of public space development centered on design.

What is it about ?

The City of Paris wishes to implement a new doctrine and new axes of public space development centered on design.

This reflection will give rise to the establishment of a "manifesto for a new Parisian aesthetic".

Street furniture, color repositories, an “aesthetic grammar” will be imagined and will become the reference for future developments.

How is it going to happen ?

From the month of January a "small call for competition", according to the words of the Town Hall will be launched to imagine new "urban totems".

From road signs, to curbs separating cycle paths from automobile traffic and traffic lights… architects and designers will have their work cut out for them.

Several working groups will also be led by deputies whose delegation is concerned by this overhaul of the aesthetics of the city: David Belliard (travel), Christophe Najdovski (green spaces), Jacques Baudrier (for the accessibility of public space for all), Carine Rolland and Laurence Patrice for the dimension of culture and memory ...

Who will participate?

The reflection for the elaboration of this manifesto must be carried out until the month of June.

Local residents, primary school students (in the spring)… will be involved in this reflection within the framework of working groups, workshops and other urban walks.

The “sphere of town planners, architects, designers and landscapers” will be consulted in the form of “meetings and informal work”.

Finally, an “ideas.paris ideas box” will be open to everyone.

When will this be in place?

The work of consultation, reflection and drafts will be held until June 2021. The Manifesto will be presented in September of the same year.
