The Ethiopian army today (Thursday) accused the World Health Organization's chairman, Madras Adhanum Gavrisus, of supporting the authorities in Tigari province, where a difficult war has been going on for the past two weeks. .

Deputy Chief of Staff, Birhan Jolla, said that overrides trying to obtain weapons and diplomatic support Tigrayan People's liberation front.

"He himself is part of this group and he is a criminal," he said in a statement broadcast on television, calling for his removal from office.

He did not provide evidence for his allegations.

He accused the 55-year-old Madras of using his international role, the first African in the position he was elected to in 2017, to try to gain diplomatic support and weapons for the rebels.

"He did everything to support them, he campaigned to get neighboring countries to condemn the war. He acted to hand over weapons to them," he claimed.

"He tried to coax people through his international profile and position to gain support for the junta."

The allegations come at a time when the World Health Organization has come under heavy pressure to coordinate global efforts against the corona plague after the United States, its largest donor, froze funding over its claims that the organization is under Chinese control.

"There have been reports that I have taken sides in this situation. That is not true and I want to say that the only side I am on is the side of peace," Madras wrote on Twitter.

He is the Ethiopian with the most senior position in international organizations, and was Ethiopia's Minister of Health and Foreign Minister from 2005 to 2016, under the previous ruling coalition.

Tigray’s popular front was in fact the most powerful force in the previous coalition, which ruled Ethiopia for several decades, until current Prime Minister Ahmad Abbey took office in 2018.

Abbey has since merged the other three regional parties into its new national party, but Tigray's Popular Front has refused to join.

Since the start of the war more than two weeks ago, hundreds and even thousands have been killed from the ranks of both sides.

Some 30,000 people fled to Sudan, and the image of Abbey - Africa's youngest leader and Nobel Peace Prize winner last year - has been tarnished, and doubts have been raised as to whether he can prevent the disintegration of the country with ethnic divisions.

Along with growing international concern about destabilization in the Horn of Africa, US President-elect Joe Biden's campaign called for an end to hostilities and the protection of civilians.

"I am very concerned about the humanitarian crisis in Ethiopia, the reports of deliberate ethnic violence and the danger to peace and regional security," tweeted Anthony Blinken, Biden's foreign policy adviser and who may also be the next foreign minister.

"The TPLF (Tigray Front) and the Ethiopian authorities must take urgent steps to end the conflict, allow a humanitarian approach and protect civilians," he added.

Ethiopia is a key ally of the United States, and its powerful army supports peacekeeping missions in Sudan, South Sudan and Somalia.

Both sides report atrocities.

Abbey’s government claims that the army forces have recorded a series of victories and are advancing towards the capital of Tigari province, Makala, a high-altitude city with about half a million inhabitants.

The popular front of Tigray, which is a skilled military force with many weapons, has a lot of support there.

The federal government plans to hold new elections in the county after the overthrow of the current government, which it claims has been illegitimate since it held district elections in September, without its approval.

Authorities in Tigray claim that this is an ethnic attack and promise strong opposition.

"Trying to control the tyrannical people by force is like going on fire," the Popular Front warned.

A diplomatic source following the conflict said Ethiopian forces were advancing along roads south and northwest of the province's capital.

Both sides accuse each other of atrocities and withholding humanitarian aid, but their claims cannot be verified due to the shutdown of telephone and internet lines in Tigray.

The government prevents journalists from entering the battle zone.

Hundreds of aid workers fled Tigray, warning of famine in an area where hundreds of thousands of people relied on aid even before the fighting broke out.

The UN said war crimes may have been committed during the fighting.

The miscreants, who make up only about 5% of Ethiopia's 110 million people, claim ethnic persecution by Abe, who came from the larger Urmo and Amhara peoples.

The prime minister has promised to put an end to ethnic politics, but his opponents accuse him of using methods similar to those of his predecessors.

Ethiopian experts doubt the government's ability to displace the Tigray front, which has a long history of guerrilla warfare in the mountainous province, where it has been deeply rooted for generations.

"The purpose of Abbey's declared war is to impose federal control over Tigray," Ethiopian expert Alex de Val wrote this week.

"No Ethiopian expert believes this is possible."

The confrontation also draws Ethiopia's neighbors: the Tigray front fired missiles at Eritrea, and Ethiopia disarmed soldiers of Tigrinya descent stationed in its peacekeeping force in Somalia.

In the capital, Addis Ababa, blood donations were collected for army soldiers, along with fears of another conflict.

"There will be no winner. The war will bring nothing but loss," said a woman of challenging descent, who asked not to be identified by name.
