Last Monday, November 16, a 10-year-old boy entered the operating room in Italy accompanied by a grand piano that replaced the uncomfortable beeping of the machines in the room with the “healing” sound of music.
The head of the Neurosurgery department, Dr. Roberto Trignani, led a team at the Salesi hospital in Ancona, which removed a double tumor in the child's spinal cord.
During the operation, the molecular biologist Emiliano Toso played music on a grand piano in the operating room, with a particular frequency recognized for its therapeutic effect on the body.
The team observed electrical activity in the brain through monitors during the four hours of the operation and said they could detect a change in activity by interrupting the music, leading them to believe that the music was perceived by the patient.
“We have tried to stop and then restart the music, noting the patient's response.
Even though I was under total anesthesia, the brain perceived the music and it was very exciting, ”said Toso.
Doctors assured that the patient is currently stable, but that they need more tests to see if another operation is required.
“Everything went well, there were no complications.
There was a magical atmosphere of complete harmony, ”said Trignani, who leads the neurosurgery unit at Riuniti Hospital in Ancona, a city in central Italy.
