The Werner-Heisenberg-Gymnasium in Garching receives so-called CO2 traffic lights, which are supposed to control the air in the classrooms.

Garching

- A clear yes to CO2 traffic lights at the Werner-Heisenberg-Gymnasium (WHG), the council members quickly agreed on this.

Due to a displacement ventilation system, air filter devices are superfluous, but can be purchased if required.

The students of the grammar school are supplied with fresh air during lessons in the classrooms via the displacement ventilation.

It then flows upwards and takes the exhaled aerosols with it, which are then transported back out of the building on the ceiling.

This displacement ventilation is installed in all areas except in the corridors.

In addition, the windows can be opened in all rooms.

“So there is no recirculation, but fresh air in the classrooms,” explained the deputy head of the Building and Environment division, Olga Stein.

Since last week, CO2 traffic lights have been set up in three classrooms, "which have proven themselves very well," said WHG Rector Armin Eifertinger.

Thanks to the traffic lights, the teachers could now make a data-based decision as to when the windows should be opened and closed again.

The system reacts quickly, and "when the windows are open, the values go down again very quickly".

District Administrator: "Regular ventilation is still better than ..."

This was also confirmed by Mayor Andreas Kemmelmeyer (PWU) from Unterföhring, where the community in the elementary school has been testing the traffic lights for a long time.

He therefore advocates purchasing a total of 119 CO2 traffic lights for all classrooms at the Garching grammar school.

“We shouldn't let too much time pass by”, warned Kemmelmeyer, especially since funding is available for this.

There was also broad support from District Administrator Christoph Göbel (CSU): "Regular ventilation is still better than having to go to distance lessons." However, there is no acute need for air purification devices due to the displacement ventilation system, "except in the cafeteria I like to have two systems, ”emphasized Eifertinger.

Over 150 children would sit together here, if the sliding doors were opened permanently, "the children would freeze".

However, these fans are not financially supported, which is why two CO2 warning systems should first check the air quality in the cafeteria.

If this test run shows that an additional fan system is needed, the chairman of the association, Gruchmann, can purchase it immediately.
