In the new year there are new regulations for the identity card.

What many will get angry about: The application will be more expensive.

  • From August 2021, new rules for ID cards will apply.

  • The most important change concerns the need for fingerprints.

  • There is criticism from local authorities and the opposition.

Berlin - It was ten years ago.

At that time, the

identity

card was introduced in credit card format.

A practical thing in and of itself if the fee for the

ID

had not also increased

from eight to 28.80 euros.

A big annoyance for many ten years ago.

The next change is due on August 2, 2021.

Because from then on the

identity card

must

contain

a chip with two

fingerprints

.

The EU-wide regulation had previously been approved by the Bundestag with the votes of the CDU, CSU and SPD, and the Bundesrat in Berlin has now followed suit.

This also makes it clear: the

ID card

will be more expensive just like ten years ago.

Instead of the 28.80 euros, you now have to pay 37 euros for the issue of the

identification document

.

The Federal Ministry of the Interior announced this in its ordinance.

According to the ministry, the

previous

identity cards

should remain valid until their expiry date.

An early exchange is of course possible at any time.

New identity card: Chip with two fingerprints is mandatory

A month ago, the municipalities and the opposition expressed doubts that the draft law would meaningfully implement the relevant EU requirements.

Konstantin von Notz from the Greens, who is also a member of the Interior Committee, criticized: "Except for Bundesdruckerei, there are only losers in this reform." An increase in

security

, however, is questionable.

There will also be changes in the transmission of

passport photos

.

The change will not take effect until May 2025. Printed photos from the machine or by the photographer can then no longer simply be brought to the authorities.

Rather, the

passport photos can

only be created digitally and transmitted securely to the passport authority.

Another possibility: The photo will be taken on site.

The new

security requirements

are intended to prevent counterfeiting.

For example, when several photos are "merged" into an artificial image (so-called morphing).

The Bundestag has just decided on the mandatory storage of fingerprints in ID cards.

The CDU / CSU and SPD voted for this.

The FDP, the Left and the Greens voted against it.

The AfD abstained.

ID card change is coming - application will be more expensive again

There is good news for people who do not assign themselves to any gender.

In future, they will be able to have

an “X”

entered in their

passport

instead of an “F” (woman) or an “M” (man).

This new regulation should come into force earlier.

With the

identity card

, everything stays the same for the time being.

If a person has been officially registered as diverse or without gender, the previous gender information is retained in the passport.

This is to protect

against possible discrimination when crossing the border.

Children's

passports

are now only valid for one year, but can be renewed several times for a further year.

Alternatively, a biometric

passport

valid

for

six years can be

applied for.

However, the accompanying photo must be taken in accordance with the specifications that allow the proportions of the face to be measured.
