The United States is not an ordinary country.

It is a continent of 330 million inhabitants, 3 different time zones, incredibly multicultural and with a power of decision that affects anywhere in the world.

This is how the delegate of EL PAÍS in the region, Amanda Mars, describes it.

These circumstances cause millions of citizens to closely monitor their presidential elections even when they are not American.

The journalist analyzed the results of the elections on November 3, together with a group of newspaper subscribers, in an exclusive and virtual meeting framed in the program of activities of EL PAÍS +.

Reporting on a territory of these magnitudes requires what Mars calls "double perspective."

You must know what happens to the farmers of Iowa if you want to understand the policy that Washington takes to Brussels and vice versa.

"It is a country that forces you to have a good local nose, because not everything goes for any part of the country, and at the same time you are acting as a diplomatic correspondent," he explains.

The journalist, who has already covered the elections that made Donald Trump president, has traveled much of the territory to feel how the electorate has changed in these four years.

What he perceived in 2016 was that Trump “liked him a lot” and not just a prototype right-wing voter.

It went further.

On this occasion, he was surprised to find many "pragmatic" followers who prefer to ignore the scandals of the still president because they are satisfied with the progress of the economy and the harshness of his messages against irregular emigration or violence in the streets.

"What I also saw is that the Democratic opposition was much more united and mobilized," Mars said.

That mobilization is what has made Joe Biden the most voted president in the history of the country.

The correspondent describes the defeat as "resounding", since in individual votes or in percentage points the distance between the two is very wide.

He considers that "the limits of Trump" have been seen, since he has caused 80 million Democrats to support a figure, that of Biden, who does not even excite them too much.

Mars pointed out that the republicans "have to understand what they have with Trump," an unrepeatable character, with a strong political nose, but with whom they have largely lost due to the wave of rejection generated in the opposition.
