At least 43 farmers have been massacred in a terrorist attack in northeastern Nigeria, and security forces are scanning today (Sunday) for dozens more missing.

The victims were buried today (Sunday) in the town of Zabaramari in the state of Borno, and about 30 of them were beheaded.

The attack began yesterday morning, and residents fear that a total of 70 people were killed.

No organization has claimed responsibility, but similar massacres have been carried out in recent years by Boko Haram or an ISIS affiliate in West Africa.

Some 30,000 people have been killed in the past decade in the Islamist conflict, which has spread to other countries in the region.

Nigerian President Muhammadu Bohari said the massacre was a "crazy" terrorist attack and said that "the whole country is mourning".

In Zabarmari, dozens of mourning residents gathered around the bodies, which were wrapped in white sheets and placed on wooden surfaces, while clerics led the prayers in their memory.

One resident told Amnesty International that among the missing were also ten women.

The county governor called on the federal government to mobilize additional forces to protect the farmers in the county, who he says are facing by-elections.

"On the one hand, if they stay at home they may starve to death, and on the other hand, if they go out to their lands they may be killed by the gunmen," he said.

Food prices in Nigeria have skyrocketed dramatically in the past year, partly due to flooding, border closures due to the corona plague and deteriorating security situation in some food-growing areas.
