In an interview with L'Opinion, the head of La France Insoumise considers it necessary for the state to strengthen itself with “massive and armed popular defense”. He had already made this proposal in 2017.

“I am not sure that all the rebels agree with me,”

admits Jean-Luc Mélenchon.

In an interview with

L'Opinion on

Monday, the head of La France Insoumise, presidential candidate in 2022, explains that he wants the return of compulsory military service.

The member for Bouches-du-Rhône had already shared this divisive idea - and in particular on the left - during the 2017 campaign.

Faced with climate change

“Passive and armed popular defense remains a necessity in my eyes,”

says Jean-Luc Mélenchon.

The presidential candidate recalls that

“we now face other threats and dangers.

Particularly from climate change,

”he emphasizes, taking the example of the Roya valley, cut off from the world since the bad weather at the beginning of October.

“So far, we have managed to cope, but with extreme difficulty.

If we had several events of this type at the same time, there would be a need for a collective effort ”

, wants to anticipate the leader of the Insoumis.

"So we will have to ask for the contribution of young French people

," he said.

In 1997, Jean-Luc Mélenchon had already

"opposed"

the abolition of military service, decided by Jacques Chirac.

The LFI candidate also proposes to broaden the missions of

"conscripts"

to within the police.

“It would change the way the people look at their police and change their internal practices.

Racism and violence would recede there ”

, he assures us, concluding:

“ When the children of the people are somewhere, everything changes ”

.
