The Centre for Health Protection of the Department of Health said today (1st) that a 72-year-old man had eaten at home yesterday (November 30) and caught pufferfish in the Lung Kwu Tan sandbank area on Sunday and cooked it by stir-frying. It appeared about five hours later. Hand numbness, weakness and dizziness in limbs.

The man went to the Accident and Emergency Department of a private hospital today for medical treatment. He was then admitted to the Intensive Care Unit of Yan Chai Hospital for further treatment. He is now in stable condition and his wife who ate with him has no symptoms.

The CHP explained that eating pufferfish is the main cause of food poisoning caused by tetrodotoxin. Tetrodotoxin is a highly toxic water-soluble neurotoxin that can affect the central nervous system.

The spokesman added that tetrodotoxin is mainly concentrated in the liver, gonads and skin of puffer fish.

Tetrodotoxin is a heat-resistant toxin and will not be decomposed during cooking, air drying or refrigeration.

Tetrodotoxin poisoning can affect the respiratory and blood circulatory system, and can be fatal in severe cases.

There is no known antidote or antitoxin that can decompose tetrodotoxin.

The Centre for Health Protection advises members of the public to avoid buying and slaughtering puffer fish or unknown fish for dietary purposes to prevent food poisoning caused by tetrodotoxin.
