Croatia is facing an upsurge in the coronavirus, with 74 new deaths in 24 hours announced in the morning, a record for this country of 4.2 million inhabitants.

Since the start of the epidemic at the end of February, nearly 130,000 people have been infected in Croatia by the new coronavirus and 1,786 have died from it.

Despite a first negative test, Mr. Plenkovic, 50, had put himself in self-isolation on Saturday, after the contamination of his wife.

He was tested again on Monday morning, the statement said.

He is now entering a 10-day quarantine.

Also recently infected, his Minister of Health, Vili Beros, announced Monday that he had resumed his work.

He also said that more than 2,300 people were currently being treated in hospitals across the country, including 255 people in intensive care.

Nearly 1,400 doctors are currently infected in Croatia, while nearly a thousand others are in self-isolation, according to the minister.
