The team of experts who examined the plane crash, in which Major Itai Zeiden and Corporal Lihu Ben-Bassa were killed about a week ago, has so far not been able to determine what caused the accident, the IDF Spokesman announced today (Wednesday). It appears that the plane disappeared from the radar, after the pilots asked the control tower to lower the flight altitude.

Investigators have so far found no findings indicating parts of the plane disengaging in the air, showering during the flight, injuring birds or anything else, and the report shows that no attempt was made to abandon the plane either.

Force hoped that the camera detected in the cockpit will help shed light on the circumstances of the crash, and is also sent to a laboratory abroad for this purpose. However, the camera was severely damaged in the crash, and probably will not be recovered.

However, the investigation into the crash continues, and the Corps said that during Representatives of the company that makes the Swallow planes will arrive in Israel, and the families of those killed have been updated on the interim findings.

The plane crash scene, last week

The crash investigation revealed that a technical malfunction in the aircraft engine was addressed about two and a half months ago, as well as another malfunctioning definition defined as "minor" that was discovered about a week before the accident.

Following this, extensive maintenance operations were carried out on the aircraft.

The IDF stressed that at this stage no connection was found between the technical condition of the plane and its maintenance operations in the past and the crash, adding that it was tested and approved for flight that morning and that two different crews flew the plane that morning.

The cause of the crash has not yet been determined.

Major Itai Zeiden

The plane carrying Zeiden and Ben-Basa took off at the Hatzerim base at 10:43, in good visibility and weather conditions.

The two were to perform pre-arranged exercises, alongside another exercise at Zeidan's discretion.

The last report of the two to the control tower included a request from the instructor to lower the flight altitude, in the opinion of the crash investigators, probably for the purpose of performing the additional exercise.

The corps stressed that this request was in accordance with procedures.

No malfunction or other emergency reports were subsequently received.

The plane disappeared from the radar systems at 11:12, at an altitude of 900 feet above the surface. It is estimated that a maximum of two minutes later it hit the ground. The report shows that it is not possible to determine at this stage how the plane maneuvered until the crash.

The families were updated on the findings.

Corporal Lehu Ben-Bassa

Air Force Commander Maj. Gen. Amikam Nurkin said following receipt of the report that "the characteristics of the accident consisted of many pieces of information, making it difficult to assemble a clear picture, and yet we must understand what happened and how it happened."

In addition, he decided not to return the Swallow aircraft array to corps training flights yet.
