Peruvian authorities capture 71 alleged members of the Shining Path | CNN

The National Police of Peru (PNP) and the Public Ministry captured 71 alleged members of the Shining Path (SL), the self-styled Communist Party of Peru, in Lima in the early hours of Wednesday morning, accused of the crime of terrorism, as reported the Interior Ministry in a statement.

In their official note, the authorities reported that the so-called Olimpo operation began its investigations in 2015 and had the participation of 752 troops with the support of 98 prosecutors.

"The Peruvian Police and Army patiently used, for 5 years, special investigative techniques such as lifting the secrecy of communications, undercover agents, video surveillance and monitoring," they said.

According to the statement, the detainees have created front organizations to carry out terrorist activities in Lima and Callao.

In that sense, it indicates that they obeyed the directives and slogans of the Shining Path leadership, made up of Abimael Guzmán Reinoso and other members who are serving sentences in different prisons.

The "arms" of the Shining Path

The authorities determined that the alleged captured members of the Shining Path worked in the organizations generated by the self-styled Popular Guerrilla Army and the United Front.

According to the statement, “these are two arms or, as they define them, the second and third instrument of struggle, respectively, which, together with the party - made up of the Central Historical Committee, the Provisional Central Committee and the National Executive Committee (CEN) of the Movement for Amnesty and Fundamental Rights (Movadef) - complete the current structure of this terrorist organization.

According to the authorities, the Popular Guerrilla Army aimed to combat, mobilize and produce income for the Shining Path through the sale of cigarettes, clothing, jellies, sports championships and raffles, among others.

For its part, according to the Police, the United Front would house the organizations generated by Movadef and the Front for Unity and Defense of the Peruvian People (Fudepp, and would have bases in Lima and in the regions, each one with its respective secretary general and organization secretary.

Shining Path kidnaps dozens of people

So far, CNN has not been able to verify whether the detainees have legal representation.
