Geneva - Sana
The World Health Organization announced today that an outbreak of yellow fever in Nigeria has killed 172 people so far.
"The outbreak represents an additional challenge to the health system in the country, as the largest country in Africa in terms of population is dealing with the Corona pandemic, many simultaneous disease outbreaks and a humanitarian crisis in the northeast," AFP quoted the organization as saying.
WHO spokesperson Tariq Jasarevic told reporters in Geneva that Nigeria has been fighting successive outbreaks of yellow fever since 2017, adding that “As of November 24, outbreaks have been reported in five states in Nigeria: Delta, Enugu, Pucci, Bino and Ebony, and a total of 530 have been reported. "A suspected case including 48 has been confirmed through laboratory tests."
He indicated that the Nigerian authorities are focusing on responding to the Corona epidemic, which limits the human resources required to conduct investigations and response activities to the yellow fever outbreak.
