Moscow began vaccinating the corona virus today (Saturday) at 70 clinics in the city, with the start of the first massive immunization campaign in Russia and the first in the world.

The Corona Task Force in the city said the Sputnik 5 vaccine was given to doctors and other medical staff, teachers and social workers because they were at the highest risk of being exposed to the disease.

"You work in an educational institute and you are a top priority for the Covid-19 vaccine, for free," read a message sent to a teacher at an elementary school in Moscow.

The capital of Russia, which is the epicenter of the epidemic in the country, recorded 7,993 suspected cases during the night, compared to 6,868 days earlier and well over the 700 cases on average diagnosed in early September.

"In the first five hours, 5,000 people were registered to be vaccinated - teachers, doctors, social workers, those who today endanger their lives the most," wrote Mayor Sergei Sobyanin on his personal website yesterday.

Vaccines are restricted to people up to the age of 60, and those with background problems, pregnant women or who have had respiratory illnesses in the past two weeks are barred from getting vaccinated.

Russia has developed two vaccines for corona, both of which have not yet completed the final stages of the trial.

Experts have expressed concern about the pace of vaccine development and regulatory approval and the start of immunization even before safety and efficacy tests are completed.

Sputnik, which was also purchased by Israel but is not expected to be given to the public, is given in two portions, 21 times apart.

President Vladimir Putin on Thursday ordered the start of the vaccination campaign.

Moscow closed all public places, including parks and cafes, except for deliveries, in late March, and police patrolled the streets in violation of the rules.

The restrictions have been eased since mid-June.

In October, certain restrictions were re-imposed, such as distance learning for some high school students, alongside a 30% limit on the number of office workers.

Across Russia, 28,782 people were diagnosed today, a daily record.

The number diagnosed in it since the onset of the epidemic is 2,431,731, the fourth highest in the world.

The number of infections in Russia is the fourth highest in the world.
