About 345,000 seventh- through ninth-grade students across the country are returning to school this morning (Sunday), after nearly three months of studying from home due to Corona's restrictions on the education system.

Middle school classes will be held at least twice a week, in capsules for up to 20 students.

The resumption of studies in these classes completes the return of all students in the education system to the schools.

However, the students of the divisions in the orange and red localities will continue to learn from home.

One week after the rehearsal, middle school students will go on a Hanukkah holiday that will last until December 20, during which there will be no distance learning.

Due to the lack of a budget, there is currently no expectation of a shortening of the vacation - despite the educational gaps that have accumulated during the study period in Zoom.

As with the other returning classes, the return to middle school students is accompanied by restrictions: each student will be able to switch between only two groups, and each teacher will be able to teach a maximum of four capsules.

These are two new restrictions compared to the start of the school year, which kept sleep away from school principals.

According to them, building a customized hours system was an almost impossible task.

Maya Givon, director of the School of Nature, Environment and Society in Tel Aviv, says that "it was very complex to prepare the system. It's very sad, but I dropped things they didn't need in high school, such as the enrichment classes the teachers give. They will zoom in."

Givon explains that limiting teachers to four capsules leads to the fact that "If, for example, I have one Bible teacher in the entire division, it means that we can only study the Bible with one class. There is nothing to do. So seventh-eighth graders here will not study Bible. Yes, not even remotely.

Because this teacher is also an educator, and she takes advantage of the whole position.

That's what it is, nothing happened. "

Students have returned to school, but Corona continues to uncover the gaps

To the full article

Since the beginning of the first closure in March, seventh- through ninth-grade students have been studying remotely, zooming in, except for a break for a month and a half in May and June and two weeks in September.

"They had to go back a long time ago. I have a girl who cried in front of the zoom. She is a very smart girl, I was afraid she would be 'dropping out' (stop connecting to distance learning) and it's good that she's coming back," says Givon.

"During distance learning there was covert dropout - there were students who did not connect to Zoom. Dropout is not characterized by the socio-economic situation or the abilities of the children. It can happen even to the smartest and most gifted children, and from the homes of the country's rich and I have such students," she adds. .

"A long time ago they had to go back."

Givon

Givon talks about another challenge back to school and that is keeping distance.

"It's an age where they like to hug, they also haven't seen each other for a long time. I did a parent-student meeting, to clarify the procedures, and we also told them not to hug."

"During one of the activities we did in the open space this week, a student came to me and asked me for permission to hug her friend and told me 'she is in a different capsule, but I was with her yesterday'. I did not allow her, we have a national responsibility to stop this epidemic," she explains.

"I can not interfere in what happens in the afternoon, but in my shift between 15-8 do not hug."

Despite the strict procedures in her school, which also include the division of toilet cubicles into different capsules, Givon says that the real separation exists only during school hours.

Absurdly, students arrive at the school on shuttles, where they "mix" regardless of capsules or age groups.

According to Givon, "In the shuttles, everyone gets mixed up. They all ride together in buses of 40 children of all ages and then are divided into capsules at school. If one child is sick, all his shuttles go into isolation and the whole capsule.

Many of the classes will be held in Zoom.

While the minimum required by the Ministry of Education's outline is "at least two days a week for physical studies," in the nature school, ninth-graders returned for five days a week, and seventh-eighth graders for four days.

"I increased jobs at the expense of a self-management budget," Givon updates.

However, in some schools, in the absence of enough teachers to teach, the principals had to return the students for only two days, during which there would be sports activities and meetings with the educator only - the other subjects would be taught in zoom.

Thus, for example, in one of the schools in Petah Tikva, the parents of the students in the classrooms received a letter that reached Walla!

NEWS in which the school principal writes that "Division students will come to the school twice a week, for meetings with educators a day of physical activity will be added where students will attend physical education classes. Currently, we do not intend to change the learning system remotely and we choose to focus on social and physical activities. The personal with the students. "

"Preparing for a big celebration"

Alongside the reviews of the outline that sometimes does not leave much choice but to prioritize between different layers, the principals tell of the excitement.

According to Raya Tobol, principal of ORT Dafna School in Kiryat Bialik, "We are all very excited, one of the teachers told me she is more excited than on September 1. We were preparing for a big celebration. Excited to meet the children, even though we met with them in open spaces from the moment it was possible. Ours prepared a lot of surprises for Sunday for the students. "

Tobol shares the view that preparing the system of hours under the rigid restrictions was a challenging task.

Like many other principals, Tobol thought it appropriate to give "preference" to the assignment of ninth-grade teachers because their students are going to high school next year.

"We had to be creative. We had to think a lot about how to arrange the hours, and yet it turned out that a lot of subjects would only be taught in zoom," says Tobol.

"We checked with the staff and also asked the children what is more important for them to learn frontally and what can be zoomed in for them. There was consensus about the importance of ninth graders learning math not zooming."

"We had to be creative."

Tobol

Shiri, a mother of two girls in eighth grade, welcomed the return to schools, but stressed that crisis management was not done well.

"As a mother of two girls in the division we are very happy to be back in school. The time at home has been too long, and it certainly has a price. Unfortunately, the feeling is of neglect of the high school students and that there is no logical and intelligent prioritization in decision making," she says.

"Leave the students and school staff to deal with an unreasonable situation for almost three months. Educational frameworks should be considered as a basis and necessity even in a crisis situation like dealing with Corona, and this should be the starting point when deciding to open or close," she added.
