[Noise Pollution/Eighteen Districts/Environmental Protection Department] Whether in public transportation or at home, noise nuisance is often annoying and even affects mental health.

However, Hong Kong is limited by the environment. Many people's homes are close to roads and are affected by noise.

According to estimates by the Environmental Protection Department, there are currently nearly 900,000 people living in Hong Kong suffering from traffic noise, accounting for 12.3% of the total population. In some areas, 24% of the population is affected, which is equivalent to one person in every four.

The Environmental Protection Department estimates that 894,000 people in Hong Kong are currently exposed to an environment exceeding 70 decibels. If calculated by the number of people, the largest number of people in Kwun Tong District suffer from noise, reaching 98,000; followed by Kowloon City District with 86,000.

However, if calculated in proportion to the population, Yau Tsim Mong District has the most affected residents, up to 24%, followed by Kowloon City District and Wan Chai District, with 21.4% and 21% of the population affected respectively.

As for the areas with the least people exposed to noise in proportion, they are Sai Kung, outlying islands and Yuen Long.

However, it is interesting that the most people in Yuen Long District filed 559 complaints about noise pollution to the Environmental Protection Department, followed by Yau Tsim Mong District, which has the largest proportion of people affected by noise, with 539 cases.

In addition, in terms of aircraft noise, Sha Lo Wan, Ma Wan, Tung Chung and other places are more affected, while Tsing Yi, Kwai Tsing and Hong Kong Island are less affected.
