Australian authorities ordered residents of a coastal town on Fraser Island, listed on the World Heritage List, to evacuate their homes today, as a fire raging in the forests approaches.
Reuters reported that the fire broke out due to an illegal fire in a camp seven weeks ago, destroying half of the island off the northeastern coast of Australia, which is part of the Great Barrier Reef and is famous for its tropical rain forests, sand dunes and lakes.
"Leaving immediately is the safest option as driving will be very dangerous soon," Queensland State Fire and Emergency Services said on social media, calling on anyone near Happy Valley to leave the area.
Officials indicate that more than ninety people, 17 helicopters and 38 vehicles are working to extinguish the fires on the island.
