- Valéry Giscard d'Estaing was born on February 2, 1926 in Koblenz.

At the age of 41 he became mayor of Chamalières.

For seven years, the politician has been in charge of the community at the foot of the Puy de Dôme.

He moved from the town hall to the presidential palace in 1974. The staunch European remained president of France until 1981.

Claude Wolff is his successor in the town hall.

Under his aegis, Geretsried enters into a town partnership with Chamalières, which fills both places with life.

Wolff died in 2005 at the age of 81, and Valéry Giscard d'Estaing's eldest son, Louis, became mayor of the city in Auvergne.

The 62-year-old, who was married for the second time, is still the town hall chief there today.

Geretsrieder Deputy Mayor Gerhard Meinl likes to stay in France and is friends with the family of Louis Giscard d'Estaing.

He also knew his father.

“It was always an honor to meet him,” says Meinl.

For Mayor Michael Müller, Valery Giscard d'Estaing was “a staunch European and a great visionary”.

According to Müller, his thoughts and actions have not only shaped his country, but also “the relationships between our countries - both large and small.

Valéry Giscard d'Estaing died on December 2nd on his property in the small town of Authon as a result of corona disease.
