Anger of the police: a "Beauvau" of security, "whatever the cost"?

2020-12-08T20:47:12.571Z

It was Emmanuel Macron who triggered the anger of the police by evoking facial checks. To calm things down, the president announced

There was an urgent need to extinguish the fire.

This Tuesday, Emmanuel Macron let it be known that he was going to organize a “Security Beauvau” in January in order to improve “the conditions of exercise” of the police.

A high mass out of the hat - on the model of the Grenelle loved by the ministers of labor or the environment - to calm the anger of the police officers, white-hot since the interview of the President of the Republic on Brut Friday and his words on facies checks.

In the process, all the union organizations had stepped up to the plate.

It is therefore no coincidence that the announcement of this “Beauvau” was made through a letter from the Head of State addressed to Yves Lefebvre, the secretary general of the Unity-SGP-FO union.

Because it is indeed Macron, and not his Minister of the Interior, who is maneuvering in this file.

“It is imposed by Macron on Darmanin because he responds directly to Lefebvre.

Moreover, Lefebvre and him have been exchanging text messages for several days ”, underlines a close friend of the president.

A “multi-year” boost?

Emmanuel Macron has promised that he will intervene “personally” during this “Grenelle de la police” which will bring together representatives of the police, elected officials and citizens.

“This Beauvau wanted by the president will cause a change in culture.

This will make it possible to get out of the tandem Minister of the Interior-union which always ends with bonuses but not with real solutions, ”anticipates a lieutenant of the Head of State.

While 2.1 billion euros have already been injected into the security budget since 2017, the Elysée does not intend to stop there.

"If means are necessary for the republican order to be assured, then the means will be put", assures an adviser to the president.

Certainly, Bercy did not make this Tuesday "any comment" on a possible additional budget line allocated to the police, but the relatives of Emmanuel Macron do not budge: "There will be resources on the supervision, the training and equipment ”, specifies the Elysée.

And this boost will be "multi-year", to understand over several years.

So not a "one shot" but a sustainable budget.

Enough to calm the spirits?

Not sure.

This Tuesday, the Alliance and Synergie unions remained cautious.

Alliance even announcing that he would not participate in the President's “Beauvau”.
