The Mexican authorities asked the United States for the extradition of Genaro García Luna, former secretary of Public Security during the government of Felipe Calderón.

As reported on Monday by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of that country, the management was carried out through the Mexican embassy in the United States at the request of the Attorney General's Office, although they did not offer more details.

In October, the former official pleaded not guilty to the five charges against him for crimes related to drug trafficking, allegedly committed between 2001 and 2020. The United States Department of Justice accuses him of alleged continuous participation in a criminal enterprise in which he would have supervised or directed at various conspirators for profit.

Genaro García Luna was arrested in December 2009 in Dallas, Texas.

He will have a new hearing in a federal court in New York on February 17, 2021.
