UEFA announced on Wednesday that it has launched a disciplinary investigation into an alleged incident of racism that occurred in Tuesday's Champions League game between Paris Saint-Germain and Istanbul Basaksehir.

An ethics and discipline inspector was appointed to investigate the events that led to the suspension of the game, due to an alleged racist incident involving the assistant coach of Basaksehir, Pierre Webó, and the fourth official Sebastian Colţescu.

Both groups of players decided to leave the pitch in apparent protest against an alleged racist comment made by a referee towards Basaksehir's assistant coach, Pierre Webo, who is Cameroonian.

After the match referee showed him a red card, Webó could be heard on the broadcast of the French channel RMC Sport repeatedly asking: "Why [did you say] black?"

and pointing to the fourth official Sebastian Colţescu.

CNN was able to confirm that Webó's red card was pending while the investigation proceeds.

Changes in the refereeing body

Dutch referee Danny Makkelie will lead the team of officials between Paris Saint-Germain and Istanbul Basaksehir when it resumes on Wednesday, UEFA told CNN.


Makkelie will be supported by assistant referees Mario Diks (Netherlands) and Marcin Boniek (Poland);

Bartosch Frankowsky (Poland) will be the fourth official, while Marco Di Bello (Italy) and Maurizio Mariani (Italy) will be the video assistant referee and the video assistant assistant referee, respectively.
