The King Emeritus Juan Carlos I has satisfied this Wednesday a debt with the Spanish Treasury for a value close to US $ 820,000, according to Javier Sánchez-Junco, the current legal representative of the ex-monarch, in a note that his firm sent to CNN.

In this note, Sánchez-Junco informs that the amount paid by Juan Carlos I is deducted from a declaration made without prior request to the tax authorities.

The tax return comes six months after the Supreme Court Prosecutor's Office announced that it was investigating him for his alleged connection to irregularities in the construction of a high-speed rail line in Saudi Arabia.

Although the Office of the Prosecutor did not specify for which specific crimes he was being investigated, his work will focus on defining or ruling out any criminal responsibility that Juan Carlos I may have incurred after ceasing to be head of state.

His attorney has previously declined to comment on the investigation.

However, he assures in the statement that his client continues "as he has always been, at the disposal of the Public Prosecutor for any procedure or action it deems appropriate.

In a letter addressed to the current monarch, the emeritus king stated that he was leaving Spain "due to the public repercussions that certain past events are generating."
