The undersecretary of Health of Mexico, Hugo López-Gatell, has recognized this Wednesday that the country is in a “second peak” of the covid-19 pandemic.

"It is a second peak, we have commented on this since March," said López-Gatell during the presentation of the daily technical report of the Ministry of Health.

Mexico has exceeded 11,000 new infections for the second day in a row and the country now has 1,205,229 positives and 111,655 deaths.

The health authorities had predicted that the peak of infections in the country would be in July.

In August, Mexico reached what the health authorities themselves defined as the "catastrophic scenario", which was reached after exceeding 60,000 deaths.

“The prediction came true.

We reached the end of September with a downward trend in the daily number of cases, which started from the first week of August, that is, all of August and all of September the cases decreased.

We reached October and the cases began to increase, ”Hugo López-Gatell explained Wednesday night.

The undersecretary and government spokesman has insisted that the epidemic began to decline in Mexico in the third quarter of this year, although now there is an upward trend in some states.

In recent weeks, different territories, such as Mexico City, Chihuahua, Coahuila, Nuevo León, Zacatecas, Durango, Querétaro, Aguascalientes and Baja California, have presented an upward trend in infections.

In the case of the capital, this Wednesday has reported a hospital occupancy of 76%, according to data from the federal government.

The metropolitan area of Mexico City last week exceeded the limit of hospitalizations that the Executive itself had set to go to a red traffic light, the system that regulates the reopening of the economy and mobility in the different regions of the country.

Although Sheinbaum has imposed new restrictions on the city in recent weeks to curb the spread of the virus, it remains on an orange traffic light "at the limit", a figure created a few weeks ago, with the rise in infections and hospitalizations.

In the capital, 18,516 people have died from covid and 244,062 have been infected with coronavirus.

The increase in cases led the Government last week to urge the population not to relax measures against the coronavirus, especially the inhabitants of the capital.

Last Friday the president, Andrés Manuel López Obrador, presented a decalogue with recommendations for citizens to follow the holiday season in December.

The suggestions include proposals such as making video calls instead of visiting relatives and meeting only between inhabitants of the same house;

keep your distance in case it is necessary to leave;

call emergency numbers in case of symptoms, get tested, and go to clinics and hospitals promptly.
