The leaders and heads of government of the member states of the European Union decided during their meeting in Brussels to impose sanctions on the Turkish regime due to its "illegal and aggressive" violations in the eastern Mediterranean.
"The measures that have been approved will be individual sanctions, and additional measures can be taken if Turkey continues its work," Agence France-Presse quoted a diplomat as saying.
The diplomat indicated that a list of names will be drawn up in the coming weeks and will be presented to member states for approval, according to the recommendations adopted by the summit of the 27 countries in Brussels.
The source indicated that the leaders of the European Union have given authorization to the Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Union Josep Borrell to submit a report to them no later than March 2021 on the development of the situation and to propose, if necessary, an expansion of the sanctions to include the names of new personalities or companies, adding that "the idea is to gradually tighten the screws" on the Turkish regime.
Last week, European Council President Charles Michel confirmed the EU’s readiness to impose sanctions on the Turkish regime due to its continuing unilateral actions and hostile rhetoric, indicating that Ankara continues its escalatory policies towards Greece and has not responded to any diplomatic initiative.
