The attorney general of the United States, William Barr, has resigned and will leave office after December 23, as announced by Donald Trump on his Twitter account a few minutes after the Electoral College confirmed the victory of Democrat Joe Biden in the presidential ones.

The confidence of the president and his top head of the Department of Justice, who had been one of the Republican's great allies at sensitive times, has been clouded in recent weeks as a result of unfounded accusations of fraud by Trump and after transcending an investigation about Hunter Biden, son of the current president-elect, after the appointment with the polls.

“I just had a very nice meeting with Attorney General Bill Barr at the White House, our relationship has been very good and he has done a wonderful job.

According to his letter, he will leave just before Christmas to spend the holidays with his family, "he posted on the social network, accompanied by a photograph of Barr's letter.

Rumors about his possible departure had multiplied in recent days.

Barr blocked the president's intentions to overthrow Biden's election victory in court when he stressed that the Justice Department had found no trace of electoral fraud large enough to change the vote count.

Furthermore, in statements to the Associated Press, he was critical of the conspiracy theories propagated.

"There is a growing tendency to use the criminal justice system as a solution to everything and when people don't like something, they want the Justice Department to investigate," the prosecutor said.

"Most of the allegations of fraud refer to specific cases and people, there are no general accusations, and those are falling apart," he stressed, completely distancing himself from Trump.

It was a turning point after a term that he assumed in February 2019 and in which he had represented great support for the Republican president.
