The actual damage caused by the monumental, and very low-key, cyberattack on servers in the United States will likely never be known, but its magnitude has struck Washington in dread.
Discovered by chance by a private company, the operation targeted a company, SolarWinds, which supplies operating software to numerous federal departments, as well as heavyweights in the American economy.

Its sponsors have been identified: the modus operandi, the sophistication of the attack and the rare footprints left point in the direction of the SVR, the Russian intelligence services.
The infected software, dubbed Orion, is said to have infiltrated the Department of Homeland Security (DHS), the Treasury, Commerce, and some 40 federal agencies.
In total, SolarWinds served 18,000 customers including governments and consulting, technology and energy companies located in North America, Europe, Asia and the Middle East.
