The National Assembly of Venezuela, chaired by Juan Guaidó, approved and sanctioned this Saturday the partial reform of the Transition Statute that "regulates the functioning of parliament during constitutional continuity."

With this step, those who currently make up the Legislative Power, with an opposition majority, intend to establish a legal basis to continue meeting beyond January 5, the date provided in the Constitution for the installation of the new parliament.

Through its social networks, the opposition party Primero Justicia explained that "the reform of the statute for the transition and the restructuring of the interim government has a single focus, putting all efforts on what is important, democratic change for all Venezuelans."

It is established that the fundamental objective is "to promote internally and internationally the holding of free, fair and verifiable presidential and parliamentary elections", as well as for the National Assembly to function through the delegated commission until January 5, 2022 or until there is free elections.

The reform was not approved unanimously.

Democratic Action ratified its support for Guaidó, but saved his vote considering that continuity should work with the plenary session of parliament and not with the delegated commission, as it was decided, that is, only with the presidents of the commissions that make up parliament.

The current Assembly is made up of 167 deputies who were elected in December 2015, for the period between January 5, 2016 and January 5, 2021.

    Venezuela is quietly abandoning socialism

On December 6 of this year, legislative elections were held under strong questioning from the domestic sphere and from the international community, and in which the opposition majority did not participate, which called not to vote.

Chavismo prevailed with 81% of the 277 seats, in a process in which, according to the National Electoral Council, almost 70% of the voters registered on the roll abstained from participating.

Among the criticisms of the recent legislative election, they highlight that the appointment of the Electoral Power was made from the Judicial Power, and not from the National Assembly, as established in the Magna Carta.

Also that the directives of the opposition parties were intervened and ad hoc boards were appointed from the Supreme Court of Justice, and that there was no independent international observation.

That is why Guaidó and parties such as Primero Justicia, Acción Democrática, Voluntad Popular and Un Nuevo Tiempo consider that it was an illegal and illegitimate electoral process.

At the moment, the government of the questioned President Nicolás Maduro has not reacted to the approval of this reform of the Law of the Statute for the Transition.

CNN contacted the Ministry of Communication and Information to request a comment, without having received a response so far.

The Judicial Power declared in contempt of the National Assembly and, from that moment, considers that all its decisions and acts are null.
