In 2020, there was a 20% decrease in the number of weddings, according to data published today (Thursday) by the Ministry of Religious Affairs.
This, among other things, against the background of restrictions on holding large events.
According to the ministry, 34,083 couples registered for marriage in 2019. In contrast, only 30,260 couples registered for marriage this year, and the difference should be added another 10% of couples registered - but without a fixed wedding date, given the difficulty of holding events in the face of restrictions.

"The year 2020 was conducted in the shadow of the corona crisis that turned the uncertainty and instability into daily conduct, which made it difficult for couples who came to the marriage covenant to make decisions," wrote the report's author, head of the ministry's rabbinate and marriage division, Rabbi Hezekiah Samin.

The largest decrease was recorded in the cities of Tel Aviv, Haifa and Givatayim, at 28%.
In Ramat Gan, Ramat Hasharon and Herzliya, there was a 20% decrease in the number of weddings.
On the other hand, in ultra-Orthodox cities such as Bnei Brak, Elad, Kiryat Sefer and Modi'in Illit, there was an increase of about 12%.
Concurrent with the decline in the number of marriages, the report points to a “dramatic increase” in the number of couples living together without marriage.
