More than 140 infected with covid-19 detected in a Puerto Rico prison

The Puerto Rico Department of Correction and Rehabilitation (DRC) reported a covid-19 outbreak affecting 143 prisoners.

The Department of Correction and Rehabilitation of Puerto Rico (DRC) reported this Monday of a covid-19 outbreak that affects 143 inmates in module 1 of the Bayamón 501 Correctional Institution. The authorities indicated that, at the moment After doing the tests, there were 174 inmates in that module.

The designated secretary of the government agency, Ana Escobar Pabón, reported in a statement that so far 141 of those infected are asymptomatic.

And he added that two more were taken to a hospital.

"The situation was identified on December 28 when it was learned that a positive correctional officer had contact with five inmates," Escobar Pabón said in the statement.

Regarding the visits to the Bayamón 501 Correctional Institution, the official said that they are still canceled.

This, in accordance with the current executive order.

The jail is located in the northeast of Puerto Rico.

According to the Puerto Rico Health Department, 74,458 confirmed cases of covid-19 were reported as of January 4.

Also 57,221 suspected cases, 4,861 probable cases and 1,562 deaths.
