One hundred people were massacred in an attack on two villages in western Niger, which declared three days of mourning yesterday.

The West African country has been experiencing a deadly wave of terrorism in recent times, and the government has announced the opening of an investigation to find those responsible for the massacre.

Eyewitnesses said several gunmen on motorcycles surrounded the villages and opened fire indiscriminately on Saturday.

The government announced the deployment of additional military forces to the Triangle Border Area, which connects Niger, Burkina Faso and Mali.

Al-Qaeda and ISIS terrorist operatives are raging in the area, and the latest massacre reveals the fragile security situation in the Sahel area, and in Niger in particular.

On February 21, the country will hold the decisive round of presidential elections, and the latest attack was one of the deadliest in Niger history.

According to the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees, the militants forced the survivors of the attack and residents of four nearby villages to flee their homes.

Many of them make their way on foot.

It has also been said that Niger, Burkina Faso and Mali, one of the major crises in the world, are already home to 851,000 refugees, and about two million internally displaced.
