New anti-corona measure: How far is the 15-kilometer radius of movement around my home?

In the fight against Corona, the federal and state governments are restricting freedom of movement: In hotspots you are only allowed to move 15 kilometers away from home. What does that mean for you?

If you live in a region with a particularly high number of new corona infections, you should only be able to move 15 kilometers from your home in the future.

Chancellor Angela Merkel (CDU) and the minister-presidents of the federal states have agreed on this.

This is intended to motivate people to further reduce personal contacts.

You can find out what a movement radius of 15 kilometers means for you personally in the following interactive map.

According to the decision by Merkel and the country leaders, the restriction on freedom of movement should apply to those regions in which the so-called seven-day incidence is above 200.

The incidence describes how many confirmed new infections were reported per 100,000 inhabitants in the past seven days.

If a district or an independent city exceeds the 200 mark, the respective federal state should take local measures to limit the radius of movement to 15 kilometers around the place of residence.

Anyone who wants to move farther from home would have to provide a valid reason, such as driving to work.

Day trips were explicitly not a valid reason.

Dozens of cities and districts are currently above the incidence value of 200. (Read here why different values are circulating for the seven-day incidence and which values are shown by SPIEGEL.)

Up until now there was only a limited radius of movement in Saxony in Germany.

The number of new infections there had risen sharply in the past three months.

Here, too, citizens are only allowed a maximum of 15 kilometers from their place of residence, for example to do sports or go shopping.

Other European countries have already gained experience with such measures.

However, these were and are often combined with other restrictions - such as a night curfew - and sometimes much more stringent.

For example, at times people in France were only allowed to go outside with a valid reason.

For walks or sports, there was a limit of one hour per day within a maximum radius of one kilometer from your own home.

In Catalonia, in northeastern Spain, it was ordered last week that people were only allowed to leave their own community for ten days with good reason, for example to go to work.
