The U.S. administration said tonight (Tuesday) that the widespread cyber attack that hit federal offices was "apparently" carried out by Russia, as part of what appears to be an intelligence-gathering operation, rather than an attempt to inflict damage.
The assessment was released in an unusual statement by the General Intelligence Bureau, the FBI and other intelligence agencies.
"This is a serious breach that will require a lengthy and focused effort to repair," the agency said in a statement.
Although suspicion of Russia arose immediately after the revelation of widespread intrusion into the federal government, outgoing President Donald Trump distorted the information and said last month that perhaps it was China that was responsible for it.

Senior officials, including Attorney General William Barr and Secretary of State Mike Pumao, as well as cyber security experts, have already said that Russia is responsible.
Last month, however, Trump tried to downplay the severity of the breach and raised, without foundation, the idea that it was China and not Russia.
A statement issued today, the first in which the administration officially pointed to any source, made it clear that Trump's remarks did not reflect the intelligence information held by the United States.
Russia denies involvement in the attack.
