Some Republicans in the US are now apparently serious about their threats not to accept positive election results for Democrats.
According to the AP news agency and some media reports, a bitter argument broke out in Pennsylvania after the Republican-led majority prevented Democratic incumbent Jim Brewster from being sworn in.
According to the Republican leaders, the senator is not allowed to take the oath of office as his narrow victory in November will be challenged in federal court.
After Democrat John Fetterman refused to approve the motion that would have prevented Brewester's election, he was removed from chairing the session.
Previously, the Republican Nicole Ziccarelli had asked for several hundred postal ballot papers to be thrown away that were missing a handwritten date on the outer voting envelope, as required by state law.
These ballots gave Brewster the edge he needed to get a win.
The problem was tried before the state court system, where Ziccarelli ultimately lost.
"We believe this is an illegal, unlawful attempt to deny Senator Brewster," said Jay Costa of the Democrats.
The Pennsylvania incident relates to Donald Trump's increasingly desperate attempts to hold onto his own office.
Nine weeks after his defeat, he continues to pretend he has won.
Several Republican MPs had also announced that they would not want to confirm Joe Biden's victory in the US presidential election.
At the joint meeting of the House of Representatives and the Senate, at which Biden's presidency should actually be formally approved, they want to refuse their approval.
They justified the plans with allegations of election fraud and alleged irregularities in the votes in several US states.
