“Right now, our democracy is under unprecedented attack.

But this is not a protest, it is an insurrection ”.

With this sharp definition, the president-elect, Joe Biden, this Wednesday valued the Republican attempt on the Capitol, in Washington, and encouraged Donald Trump to step forward and address his followers on national television to ask them to leave. the seat of popular sovereignty.

"Today is a painful reminder of how fragile democracy is," insisted Biden, urging to reestablish it and also to regain decorum and dignity, blown up by images of the rampages of the robbers on Capitol Hill.

“This is an assault on the Capitol, on the representatives of the people, on the police officials who have promised to protect them, and on the officials who work in the heart of our Republic.

It is an assault on the rule of law, an assault on the most sacred of American companies: the management of the public reservoir.

Let me be clear: the scenes of chaos in the heart of the Capitol do not reflect the real America, because we are not like that.

What we are seeing is a handful of extremists dedicated to disorder.

It is not dissent, it is disorder.

It is chaos, and borders on sedition, ”he stressed.

"Reflect on what your children will think when they see this" on television, added the Democrat, referring to the live broadcast of the coup attempt, "in what the rest of the world is watching."

Unlike his predecessor, who preferred not to come forward publicly and take refuge in a video message posted on Twitter, the president-elect gave a brief address to journalists in Wilmington, Delaware, without questions.

The former vice president of Barack Obama said he was ashamed that the world is witnessing this unfortunate episode.

“I am shocked and saddened by the fact that our nation, for so long a beacon of light, hope and democracy, is living through this dark moment.

Because America is honor, decency, respect and tolerance, that is what we are and what we have always been.

For nearly two and a half centuries, we, the people, for the sake of a more perfect union, have looked after the common good.

America is much better than what we have seen today, ”he reiterated in an appeal to unity and to overcome the dangerous polarization left by the Republican.

“A president's words matter: At their best, they can inspire;

at worst, incite, "added Biden, so he urged the instigator of the assault to step forward and ask his followers to lay down their attitude.

"I ask President Trump to appear on national television now and fulfill his oath, defend the Constitution and demand an end to this siege."

Turning a deaf ear, the Republican turned to his favorite communication channel, the social network Twitter, to publish a lukewarm message more than two hours after the assault in which he never condemned the events and, on the contrary, claimed to understand the reasons and the feelings of the rebels, because, he said, victory at the polls has been taken away from him.

Like Nero basking in the Rome fire, Trump not only failed to put out the dangerous fire in Washington, but he insisted on the same baseless and court-refuted accusation of being the victim of electoral fraud.
