Pro-Trump protesters stormed the United States Capitol on Wednesday, as members of Congress met to certify the Electoral College results on the 2020 presidential elections.

Video from inside Congress showed Trump supporters marching through Statuary Hall.

Capitol Police requested additional help from law enforcement to contain the protests, including federal authorities, according to a source familiar with the situation.

How the protests started:

Shortly after 1 p.m. Washington time, hundreds of pro-Trump protesters broke through barriers along the perimeter of the Capitol.

There they confronted officers in full riot gear.

Some called the policemen "traitors" for doing their jobs.

About 90 minutes later, police said protesters entered the building.

Evacuations

Congress went into recess, halted the certification process, and the floor of the House of Representatives was evacuated.

US Vice President Mike Pence, who oversaw the voting of the Electoral College results, was also evacuated.

Curfew

The city of Washington will be under a curfew beginning at 6:00 pm local time, Mayor Muriel Bowser announced.

The measure will remain in effect until 6:00 am on Thursday.
