Senate Democratic leader
Chuck Schumer
has asked President Donald Trump's cabinet to
remove him
from office following Wednesday's violent assault on Capitol Hill by supporters of the president.
In a statement Thursday, .Schumer said the attack on the Capitol "was an insurrection against the United States, incited by the president."
He added: "This president should not be in office for another day."
Schumer said Vice President Mike Pence and the Cabinet should invoke
the 25th Amendment
and immediately remove Trump from office.
He added: "If the vice president and the cabinet refuse to stand up, Congress should reconvene to
impeach the president

The 25th Amendment, adopted after the assassination of John Kennedy in 1963, talks about presidential succession and disability.
It can be used if the president
does not resign voluntarily
and is not able to do his duties as first president.
For it to apply, Pence and a majority of Trump's cabinet would have to declare the president
incapable
of fulfilling his duties and remove him from office.
If the president objects, the issue should be decided by Congress.
Clarín
consulted several experts about the feasibility of these options.
Glenn Smith, a professor of Constitutional Law at the California Western School of Law, said that "the 25th Amendment process is
the most practical alternative
."
“The vice president and the majority of the cabinet in these next days should be ready to elevate the interests of the country above the short-term interests of the party or personal.
But the problem with the 25th Amendment process is that it depends on the
courage and responsibility
of those in power. "
Manoj Mate, Professor of Constitutional Law at the University of California, noted: “It is highly unlikely that Trump will resign.
It is possible that the Cabinet could invoke the 25th Amendment or, alternatively, that the House of Representatives controlled by the Democratic majority could initiate
an impeachment
that would then go to the Senate for trial.
Some Democratic members of Congress have already expressed their support for impeachment. "
