Democratic lawmakers in the US Congress launched a movement to remove outgoing President Donald Trump from power immediately in light of the violence and the storming of the Capitol building yesterday.
In a statement, the leader of the Democratic minority in the Senate, Chuck Schumer, described the storming of Congress by hundreds of Trump supporters as a "coup against the United States caused by Trump," adding: "This president should not remain in office for another day."
Schumer indicated that the fastest and most effective way to remove Trump from power is to activate the 25th amendment to the United States Constitution, which provides for the reins of government to be handed over to the Vice President in circumstances including the death of the head of state or the loss of the ability to perform the duties of the presidency.
The leader of the Democratic minority stressed the need for Congress to meet in the event that Vice President Mike Pence and the Cabinet refuse to take this measure with the aim of launching impeachment measures against Trump.
In addition, Washington Mayor Muriel Bowser strongly criticized the acts of violence witnessed by the US Congress headquarters yesterday, describing it as "internal terrorism and rebellion."
Democrat Boozer said during a press conference held today that the police apparently failed to deal with the storming of the Capitol by supporters of Trump, noting that the federal security services had dealt in a much more aggressive manner with the anti-racism protests of supporters of the "Black Lives Matter" movement in the city last summer. .
Bozer called for an investigation into this difference between the two ways the security services dealt with the two incidents.
