Trump, Pence haven't spoken since Capitol attack, sources say

Two sources familiar with the matter say the divide between President Trump and Vice President Mike Pence has deepened in the past 24 hours.

Trump is angry at Pence and Pence is disappointed and saddened by Trump, sources say.

Pence's sentiments piled up after weeks of Trump trying to convince him to unilaterally annul the election and culminated in the chaos fueled yesterday by the president's comments.

Additionally, Pence was the one who spoke by phone with Acting Defense Secretary Christopher Miller, urging a faster response from the National Guard following widespread frustration among lawmakers over the lack of response.

Trump never called to check on his well-being and has yet to reach Pence even now.

The source said that despite the current dynamics, at this point, neither of them appears to be doing anything in response, such as a Pence resignation.

Furthermore, the source says that many administration officials who have been discussing the invocation of the 25th Amendment, as CNN reported last night, feel today that such a move would do more harm than good.

A separate source close to Pence says those conversations had not reached his office earlier this afternoon, but lawmakers have been trying to reach him about the matter.

Congress ratifies Biden's victory in the Electoral College

Congress just confirmed President-elect Joe Biden's victory over President Donald Trump in the Electoral College.

The Senate and House of Representatives rejected objections to discard Biden's electoral votes in Georgia and Pennsylvania.

Republicans also objected to electoral votes from Arizona, Nevada and Michigan, but the motions failed before they reached debate.

“The announcement of the status of the vote by the President of the Senate shall be considered a sufficient declaration of the persons elected President and Vice President of the United States, each for the period beginning on January 20, 2021, and shall be registered together with the list of votes in the newspapers of the Senate and the House of Representatives, ”said Vice President Mike Pence after counting all the Electoral College votes.

The certification comes after pro-Trump agitators stormed the U.S. Capitol early Wednesday.

The joint session of Congress, which is normally a ceremonial step, was halted for several hours when the agitators stormed the building.

Proceedings resumed around 8 pm Miami time, when Pence, as president of the Senate, put the session of that chamber into operation again.

"Let's get back to work," Pence said.

Trump promises "orderly" transfer of power

Following the formal confirmation of President-elect Joe Biden's victory in the Electoral College, President Trump said the decision "represents the end of the best first term in presidential history."

"Although I strongly disagree with the outcome of the election, and the facts support me, there will be an orderly transition on January 20," Trump said in a statement.

“I have always said that we would continue our fight to ensure that only legal votes were counted.

While this represents the end of the best first term in presidential history, it is just the beginning of our fight to make America great again, ”Trump said repeating the false claims about the elections that incited a mob to storm the Capitol on Wednesday.
