The conductor will step down in September 2022. The city will entrust him with "the appointment of a new direction when the time comes".

Marc Minkowski will leave the direction of the Opéra de Bordeaux in August 2022. According to France Musique, the conductor has decided not to run for a third term.

After six years, sometimes tumultuous, at the head of the institution, Marc Minkowski will not quite leave the region.

In a press release, he said he wanted to "also

create in Bordeaux and the New Aquitaine region a unique festival dedicated to new musical experiences, always closer to music lovers from the Gironde City and beyond

".

As for the city of Bordeaux, it explains that it wants to give it "

a role in the configuration resulting from the appointment of a new management when the time comes

".

In June 2016, the conductor, a specialist in Mozart and baroque music, succeeded Thierry Fouquet.

Marc Minkowski began his career as a bassoonist in baroque groups and then, at the age of 19, founded the Musiciens du Louvre in 1982.

At the head of his ensemble, he quickly became one of the main players in the revival of baroque music on ancient instruments in Europe.

In 2008 he also became musical director of Sinfonia Varsovia, one of the main orchestras in Poland.

In January 2013, he was entrusted with the artistic direction of the Mozartwoche (Mozart Week), which has been held every year in Salzburg (Austria) since 1956 to celebrate the birth of the composer.

A position he gave up to devote himself to the Opéra de Bordeaux.

In September 2016, he inaugurated his first season with an original production of

Voyages de Don Quichotte

, on scores by Maurice Ravel and Richard Strauss, with an equestrian stroll "

outside the walls

" of the opera, on the pavement of Bordeaux.

A year later, season 2 opens with an equally flamboyant production of "

La Vie parisienne

" by Jacques Offenbach.

In the spring of 2019, an open conflict had opposed the director of the Opera to the musicians of his orchestra.

"Minkowski is criticized for being too little present in his office and for programming himself too often at the head of the orchestra"

, wrote Christian Merlin in

Le Figaro

.

Marc Minkowski, who had been appointed by Alain Juppé, announces his departure a few months after the election of a new mayor (EELV), Pierre Hurmic, and in the very uncertain context of the health crisis.
