The cold winter monsoon is coming to an end, but the temperature in many districts in Hong Kong this morning (13th) dropped to a single digit. The coldest area is no longer Tai Mo Shan, but Ta Kwu Ling and Pak Tam Chung, with records of -0.9 °C and -0.5 °C are the lowest temperatures since the two weather stations have been recorded. Some areas in the New Territories have also reported frost. The Observatory explained that the phenomenon in these areas is due to significant "radiative cooling" in the interior of the New Territories.

The Observatory predicts that another winter monsoon will affect southern China at the beginning of next week, and the weather will turn cold again. The lowest temperature in the urban area will be only 10 degrees next Monday (18th). It will warm up a bit next weekend, but it will be cloudy and rainy.

This morning, the temperature in the urban area of Hong Kong dropped to about 10 degrees, and in many parts of the New Territories it fell to 5 degrees or below. In the past, Tai Mo Shan, the coldest area in Hong Kong, was 4.6 degrees, but Ta Kwu Ling and Pak Tam Chung both recorded minus temperatures.

The highest temperature in Taguling reached 16 degrees yesterday, but it dropped to -0.9 degrees this morning, breaking the record of the lowest temperature of -0.8 degrees on January 11, 2009. It became the lowest temperature recorded at the weather station since 1988. The temperature difference is also very large.

The highest temperature in Pak Tam Chung also reached 15.6 degrees yesterday, and the temperature dropped to -0.5 degrees this morning, which also broke the record of 0.1 degrees on January 11, 2009, and became the lowest temperature since 1996 at the weather station.

This morning, Ta Kwu Ling and Pak Tam Chung recorded -0.9 degrees and -0.5 degrees respectively, making them the lowest temperatures since these two weather stations have been recorded.

The Observatory explained that the "radiative cooling" in the interior of the New Territories this morning was quite significant.

The so-called "radiative cooling" means that the ground heat is released into the sky at night in the form of infrared rays. The open areas in the interior of the New Territories have fewer tall buildings and faster heat dissipation.

Under the conditions of clear air, breeze and dryness, radiant cooling will be particularly obvious in the open areas of the New Territories. On the contrary, the urban population is concentrated, and the activities of the people generate a lot of heat. High-rise buildings also accumulate heat during the day, and the temperature drops slowly at night. .

In addition, urban areas close to the sea will be regulated by the sea surface temperature, and the temperature will drop more slowly. On winter nights with sparse or cloudless clouds, the northern New Territories is a suburban area and is far from the sea, so the temperature will drop faster.

At the beginning of next week, it will turn cold again and the urban area will see a low of 10 degrees

The winter monsoon, which is currently bringing cold weather to Guangdong, will ease in the next two or three days, and the temperature in Hong Kong will rise.

The Observatory predicts that on Friday (15th) the highest temperature in the urban area will rise to 21 degrees. It will be generally fine, dry during the day, and haze in some areas.

Another winter monsoon will affect southern China early next week, and Hong Kong will turn cold again.

The Observatory predicts that next Sunday will be sunny and dry for part of the time. It will become significantly colder. The minimum temperature in the urban area will drop to 12 degrees. The next day it will further drop to 10 degrees. It will be cold in the morning, generally fine and dry. The cold weather is expected to continue until next. on Tuesday.

The Observatory predicts that a cloud belt will bring rainy weather to the south China coast in the middle and late next week. Therefore, next Wednesday (20th), which is the 24th solar term "Great Cold", will be cloudy and rainy, and the urban temperature will rise to 14-18 degrees. , It is expected that rainy days will last until the weekend.
