In Bavaria it should be colder again.

But the Freising Water Rescue warns: The ice is not yet bearing.

The appeal is therefore: "Do not enter!"

District

- It will be colder again in Bavaria over the weekend.

Permafrost is also popular for the Freising district.

This increases the temptation to skate a few laps on the frozen ponds.

However, that would be life-threatening.

“The ice doesn't wear out,” warns Moritz Westermeier, head of the Freising water rescue service.

Anyone who gets on the ice will most likely break in.

“Do not enter” is therefore Westermeier's appeal.

Load bearing capacity can be used even more poorly by snow

I only wear ice from a thickness of about ten centimeters.

The local ponds are a long way from this - even if the ice surfaces are already partly stable.

"In addition, there is snow in places," says Westermeier, "which is why the load-bearing capacity of the ice can be assessed even more poorly."

Good to know: Ice surfaces are never "released" for use, so the risk is always with each individual. However: If the ice is stable, the Freising water rescue service at the Stoibermühle will set up a security service - "which rarely happens", like Westermeier emphasizes.

In the background, however, the “rapid response group” of the water rescue service is ready for action 24 hours a day - like the fire department.

The rescue team is alerted by beeps if the emergency number 112 is dialed because someone has broken into the ice.

“Ten to 20 of our 100 active members are always ready for such assignments,” Westermeier explains.

There were then five to six water watchmen who rushed to the scene of the accident with their cars, trailers and boats.

According to Westermeier, there have been no ice falls in recent years.

However, the water rescue service continuously practices ice rescue in order to be prepared for an emergency.

Wasserwacht is closely involved in fighting the pandemic

What many do not know: The water rescue service is part of the Bavarian Red Cross and is therefore intensively involved in the fight against the corona pandemic: Members of the water rescue service helped run the test track, made test swabs in old people's homes and are also now involved in the major vaccination campaign with it.

Rescuing ice in case of need would not suffer from this commitment, emphasizes Westermeier: "We can manage that very well."

For the coming weekend, the following applies: A walk on the banks of the ice-covered ponds is certainly a nice thing - but a trip on the ice could be fatal.

Broke into the ice: correct behavior in an emergency

Anyone who has broken into the ice should shout for help and move little.

You can try to push yourself onto the ice or break off the ice until it bears again.

Anyone who experiences an ice fall should dial 112 immediately.

Never approach the break-in point while standing.

Aids for the rescue can be branches, ropes, a scarf or other items of clothing.

Always think about your own safety.

After the rescue: Only remove wet clothing in a warm room.

The 7-day incidence in the Freising district must be corrected upwards: According to the district office, the new reporting system caused problems.

The district administrator regrets the data glitch.
