There were more deaths in Munich in 2020 than the average in previous years.
We talked to a renowned doctor about how the numbers should be assessed.
Munich - In Munich * there were far more
deaths
in
2020
than the average in previous years.
The number of people who died from 2015 to 2019 was around 11,400 per year.
There were no major swings upwards or downwards.
Not so in 2020: According to the city's current statistical figures, 12,313 people died in the previous year.
This corresponds to an increase of
6.4 percent
compared to 2019 (11,571 deaths)
.
Munich: Corona patients in normal and intensive care units are currently decreasing
Accidental
excess mortality
or the
corona pandemic
?
Professor Clemens Wendtner, chief infectious disease specialist at Munich Clinic Schwabing, sees a connection: "I am convinced that we have corona-related excess mortality." In
2020,
around 580 deaths in connection with
Covid 19 disease were
registered
in Munich
.
There are now 685. That means that in the first two weeks of the new year alone, there were more than 100 corona deaths in the state capital.
There is a small glimmer of hope: The
number of corona patients in
both normal and intensive care units in Munich's hospitals is decreasing.
At the turn of the year, around 180 people still had to receive intensive care, as of Thursday it was 130. In the normal wards, the number of corona patients fell from around 400 to currently 300 during this period.
Wendtner can confirm this trend for the houses of the Munich Clinic.
"We are seeing a slight decrease in the number of patients." But he could not yet speak of the all-clear.
In this respect, it is also too early to relax the corona restrictions.
“Otherwise we experience a yo-yo effect.” In addition, many hospitals are now caught in a “black ice trap”.
Corona in Munich: Mainly old people affected - 100-year-olds survived infection
So far, 1931 corona patients have been treated as inpatients at
the
Munich Clinic
.
295 of them died - a mortality rate of 15.3 percent.
Six months ago, according to Wendtner, this rate was nine percent.
According to the infectiologist, many older people had to be
treated
for
corona disease
in the past few weeks
.
"We had a lot of patients from old people's homes here on the ward." People from the 80 to 90-year-old group in particular have died.
In addition to the sad fates, there were also happy moments: "A 100-year-old survived the infection."
Wendtner thinks it makes sense that FFP2 masks * have to be worn in local public transport and when shopping.
“But that could have been introduced earlier.” The doctor believes that
a large-
scale closure of public spaces
must be expected by
Easter
.
The gastronomy is unlikely to open again in early February.
In Munich, around 60 percent of the previous corona deaths were older than 80 years.
35 percent were between 61 and 80
years
old.
