United States will deport former paramilitary chief Hernán Giraldo Serna, alias "El Patron," to Colombia after serving a sentence for drug trafficking, a senior immigration official confirmed to CNN.

Giraldo Serna, who will be sent to his country of origin on January 25, is currently in the custody of the United States Immigration and Customs Enforcement Service (ICE for its acronym in English), added the source consulted by CNN.

The Colombian Minister of Justice, Wilson Ruiz Orejuela, confirmed the information and declared that Hernán Giraldo Serna must answer for various crimes before the judicial authorities in Colombia.

«The former head of the Self-Defense Forces will be deported in the next few days and handed over to Migración Colombia.

The government is carrying out all the coordination to make the arrest warrants effective, once it steps on Colombian soil, "said the minister.

Giraldo Serna had been extradited to the United States in 2008. CNN is trying to determine if he has legal representation in Colombia.
