He was an unusual, quirky character in the world of sailing.

A passion for sailing, and in particular for ocean racing which he enjoyed, loved.

Both boats and sailors.

And the achievements of his Gitana Team confirm it… Born on June 30, 1963, Benjamin de Rothschild died of a heart attack on Friday afternoon at his home in Pregny (Switzerland).

"The first thoughts of sailors and members of Gitana go to his wife Ariane de Rothschild and his children, as well as to all of his family and relatives to whom they send their most sincere condolences," detailed Gitana in a press release announcing the sad news.

The son of Edmond and Nadine de Rothschild had been at the head of the group created by his father since 1997. And as his offshore racing team recalled, he was "passionate about finance, sailing and cars, in love wine ”but also“ a committed philanthropist, in particular by developing Innovation within the Adolphe de Rothschild Foundation Hospital ”.

Repeated victories

A personality far from the family mold, at least in appearance, he had decided to continue the Gitana saga initiated by his great-great-aunt Julie de Rothschild and his father, by creating in 2000, with his wife Ariane de Rothschild, his stable of sail.

And with significant financial resources, a declared ambition and well-crafted projects, victories have been linked on the oceans of the planet: Route du Rhum (with Lionel Lemonchois in 2006), Transat Anglaise, Rolex Fastnet Race and Transat Jacques Vabre, in particular… Only the Vendée Globe has so far refused to the prestigious team.

Benjamin de Rothschild was never the last to embark on board his ships and to celebrate their successes with dignity during memorable evenings.

Their guests, and journalists, have not forgotten the cocktail combining business and sailing at the Palais de Tokyo.

While the Maxi Edmond de Rothschild, Ultimate Flying, is in the midst of a Jules Verne Trophy record attempt (crewed round the world), with Franck Cammas and Charles Caudrelier at the helm, their owner has left them.

A final about-face for this unique and appreciated character in an offshore racing environment that he boosted with his ambition and his success.
