At about 5 o'clock in the morning today (16th), the Sham Shui Po unit in the tenement building on Apliu Street, Sham Shui Po, was suspected to have caught fire due to a short circuit of the extension cords. The tongue of fire came out of the window. Nine people inhaled smoke and were sent to hospital.

By 9 am, the firefighters returned to investigate the unit that caused the fire. At the scene, the unit was seen torch, the walls and corridors were blackened, the window frames were burnt to deformation, and all items in the unit were burned.

As for the hotel next to the burning unit, it was fine, but when the fire started, heavy smoke hit the unit upstairs and some residents were trapped in their homes.

Mr. Deng, who lives on the upper floor of the burning unit, said that when the incident occurred, he was out for work. When his family was sleeping in the apartment, they heard a neighborhood yelling for a fire alarm. When Deng’s family escaped, he saw dense smoke in the corridor, and the lower-level unit was blazing. So he returned to the unit to wait for the firefighters to rescue.

Mr. Deng was anxious while waiting for news from his family downstairs. Fortunately, his family was safe and sound.

The occupant of the building, Mr. Tang, said that he was not at home in the burning unit, and his family members said that a lot of smoke was emitted during the fire.

He went home immediately after receiving the news. At that time, several fire trucks were on guard and roads were blocked. "It was already (the fire scene) was so hot, and there was nothing wrong with my house and business, but he couldn't leave at that time." He pointed out. At that time, there was a lot of heavy smoke outside the unit, and his family decided to close the door and stay in the unit for rescue. Fortunately, the family was fine.

However, his unit has water and electricity problems, and he will live with his mother for a period of time.

He said there was suspected renovation in the downstairs location, and the hotel was operating next to the burning unit.

The incident occurred at about 5 am today (16th) when a low-rise unit at No. 35-37 Apliu Street, Sham Shui Po, near a tenement building near Maple Street, suddenly caught fire. The fire was very violent. The tongue of fire spouted out of the window, and a lot of thick smoke and light were emitted. There was an explosion, and an air-conditioner flew down the back alley.

A large number of residents awakened from their sleep, dozens of people fled to the ground to take shelter, including children and infants in their arms.

According to the police, at 5:27 in the morning today (16th), the police received a number of reports that a fire broke out in a unit at 35 Apliu Street, Sham Shui Po.

Police officers arrived at the scene and firefighters put out the fire. Initial investigations believed that a short circuit of the extension wires caused the fire at the site.

In the incident, 1 man, 6 women (between 29 and 69 years old) and two girls were unwell after inhaling heavy smoke. They were soberly sent to Caritas Medical and Kwong Wah Hospital for treatment.

About 31 people evacuated to a safe location on their own.
