The integrated learning has accompanied the children of Israel for a long time and is here to stay for a long time, even in the period after the corona.

Education experts are convinced that in the right dose, the combination of frontal learning in schools with online learning, which provoked much criticism during the Corona crisis, may contribute greatly to both students and teachers.

Understanding that there is no going back, the Ministry of Education is trying to take advantage of the crisis to develop a proper infrastructure that will serve the system in the future as well.

Thus, Education Minister Yoav Galant recently appointed a professional team to examine the issue, which examines, among other things, the possibility of studying in a hybrid way after the corona - that is, learning that combines frontal and online lessons.

According to the ministry, the plan has not yet been formulated, and that these days the main occupation of the staff is online learning under the conditions of closure, and not long-term planning.

"Integrated learning will remain in the education system even after the corona as part of the managerial and pedagogical flexibility and as part of the measures to reduce disparities," ministry officials said.

"The move will also be possible thanks to the purchase of 150,000 laptops, the laying of innovative technological infrastructure in about 4,600 educational institutions, the expansion of distance learning training for teaching staff and the expansion of the digital content database, among other things, together with the National Digital Israel headquarters."

According to experts, Israel is perhaps even more prepared for a move than other countries where there has not been such a massive closure of the education system.

For the firm’s perception, the Corona era has created an opportunity to turn the outdated education system into a more innovative method that fits the needs of the modern world of employment, and exploits the benefits of the digital changes that have taken place in the last two decades.

The intention is to combine online learning with frontal, even in the post-Corona era, when online learning will not necessarily be done remotely.

For example, it will be possible to split a class into two groups - in one they will study frontally, and in the other group they will study online in a nearby class or from home.

According to the ministry's method, integrated learning has many advantages, including the ability to mobile teachers virtually so that a teacher living in Tel Aviv can overcome the students living in the periphery for several hours a day, students can do independent educational "marathons" and more.

Once a week, remotely

"You have to study remotely at least once a week, even if it is two days and no disaster will happen, the children will still meet three times a week at school with their teachers and friends," said Professor Ina Blau, head of the Master of Science, Technology and Learning Systems program. Innovation in learning technologies at the Open University.

"Online learning will develop a very important skill - digital literacy, which is very difficult to develop without the use of technology. This is a critical skill in the job market today," she explained.

"Plus, I think we just started with the epidemic period. But regardless of emergencies, whether it's missiles in the south or an epidemic, it really wouldn't hurt for students to study online at least one day a week."

Blau's statement is relevant to fourth- and upper-grade students, while "first- and third-graders still need significant adult accompaniment during online learning and this is a family burden."

"Compared to other countries in the world, we are in a good place, in terms of system readiness and staff," Blau noted, emphasizing that distance learning should be limited to twice a week.

"I would not switch to something more massive than once or twice a week, like in emergencies. The children obviously need the face-to-face contact, both the teachers and the friends."

"It will benefit students, even in emergencies."

In Professor Blau's view, online learning can be successful in "content professions," by definition.

"Math lessons for example, students can benefit from having silence during the lesson. When the lesson is recorded you can repeat things, no one will miss the lesson. In general these are areas where skills are built tier after tier, and this can greatly help, and neutralize distractions. Today in quantities. "

Prof. Blau supports the use of zoom, which she claims will allow teachers to divide students into groups according to the level of knowledge, and move around between the silent virtual groups.

"The same thing can be done of course in classrooms, but it produces noise and hurts children who have concentration problems," she said.

"In online learning each group will be in a different room and the teacher will only hear this group and can relate. There are technological options here that even facilitate teaching methods. It is possible, for example, to give students questions with one correct answer and show them the distribution of answers. Whether the class understood or did not understand. "

According to Blau, even in professions of a different nature, integrated learning can be effective.

"Even in subjects where discussion and expression of opinion are important, distance learning can help - in the same framework of split rooms of 5-4 students in each group. This way the students will speak much more than in a class of 30."

It trusts students to connect to distance learning systems and not shy away.

"It will be supervised, the teacher is there, he sees the student, his performance, there is follow-up here. Even when the student connects while the teacher is not there to repeat the recorded material or perform assignments, the teacher will still be able to see it."

"The Corona has shaken up the old learning model"

Professor Yossi Dahan, an education expert from the Academic Center for Law and Business, is also convinced that the Corona has provided a rare opportunity to “shake up” the education system.

"The Ministry of Education and teachers will have to reinvent themselves," he said.

"The corona has also shaken up the education system, the old model of learning and the role of the teacher and the school. At the institutional level it can no longer be a model whereby Ministry of Education officials land instructions from above and schools fulfill them. There must be cooperation between central government and local authorities And the schools. "

According to Dahan, the teaching process will have to undergo a transformation.

"In this crisis the emotional and social components have become very central in the online environment, so the system will have to take these components into account," he said, "the outdated notion that students should be filled with information is no longer relevant in an age where information is public and accessible. The emotional and social dimensions of the student. "

"The notion that students need to be filled with information is irrelevant."

Dahan mentions in his remarks the research of Jal Mehta, a professor of education at Harvard University, according to which the education system should get rid of the one-pattern model that is suitable for all children and allow for more differentiation.

"Some of the children actually 'flourish' from online learning, and some do not. Some children do not like to talk in class, but when you zoom in then they have no problem expressing their opinion in chat. So hybrid learning should be adapted to students as well."

Dahan, who specializes in theories of social justice, does not forget one more component relevant to integrated learning and that is the social gaps, which were only widened during the Corona period.

"In our education system today there are huge gaps of inequality, so in the transition to hybrid learning on a regular basis the education system will have to focus on those who are at the bottom of the social and economic scale, certainly in the current economic crisis situation."

Dahan calls on the education system to invest in those who are at the bottom of the ladder.

"Even if we leave the Corona, hundreds of thousands of unemployed will still stay with us for a long time, and these are families with children," he says, "they will not have the necessary means for online learning. We are already in a situation where more than 20% of students do not have internet and computers. "Then the education system will have to invest more resources in them. That should be the main task of the Ministry of Education."
