The Christian Democratic Party in Germany, to which Chancellor Angela Merkel today belongs, has elected Armin Laschet as its president.
The German newspaper Bild stated that the victory of Laschet, the head of the state government of North Rhine-Westphalia, in the run-off for the party elections that took place via the Internet came after he beat his rival Friedrich Merz, noting that the victory must still be officially confirmed by voting via mail.
The newspaper added that Lachette got the votes of 521 delegates out of 1001 delegates invited to vote, ahead of Meretz, who got 466 votes.
After this victory, Laschet is in a position to lead his party in the general elections to be held in Germany next September.
